Thailand’s Ancient Capital Ayutthaya

Heading out to Ayutthaya!!

I woke up early, grabbed a quick coffee in Bangkok, and hopped on the morning train to Ayutthaya. The ride took about two hours, and as soon as I stepped off, I could feel the slower pace compared to the capital.

Wat Mahathat

My first stop was Wat Mahathat. Standing in front of the Buddha head wrapped in tree roots felt surreal. I’d seen it in photos so many times, but in person, there was a quiet energy there that gave me goosebumps.

Wat Phra Si Sanphet

The three massive chedis were glowing in the sunlight. I sat in the shade for a while, imagining what the city must have looked like in its prime when Ayutthaya was one of the wealthiest cities in Asia.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram at Sunset

Wat Chaiwatthanaram. The temple is right on the river and as the sun started to set, the red bricks turned gold. It was the perfect ending to the day – peaceful, quiet, almost magical.

Tips

  • Go early to avoid the heat
  • Rent a bike for the full experience
  • Don’t miss local snacks like roti sai mai and river prawns
